Jagiellonian University, Poland’s oldest university, owes its unique status to its more than 600-year-old tradition and important achievements of the modern era.

University history:

The history of the university begins on May 12, 1364, when King Casimir the Great founded the Krakow Academy and founded the Studium Generale, which initially included three faculties: Law, Medicine and Philosophy.
1400 – A turning point in the history of the Jagiellonian University
The year 1400 was particularly significant in the history of the university, when King Władysław Jagiełło, thanks to a personal donation from Queen Jadwiga, renovated the school and introduced major organizational changes. In 1397, Pope Boniface IX granted permission to open the lost College of Theology, thus putting the Krakow Academy on a par with other European universities.
The laws of King Gagio have opened a new chapter in the history of Krakow’s alma mater. It was in this university that the ideas of the State Council were born. Thanks to a group of scholars who contributed to the revival of the Academy and played an important role in its development at the beginning of its existence, the University has become one of the most prestigious in Europe.
The Krakow Academy has never forgotten the role of Queen Jadwiga and King Władysław Jagiełło, which was officially recognized in 1818 by giving the university a new name, Jagiellonian University, thus emphasizing the importance of the university’s restorer.
In 1964, the Studium Generale, which led to the creation of the Jagiellonian University, celebrated its 600th anniversary. This jubilee coincided with the expansion of the university.
The Institutes of Physics, Mathematics, Zoology and Geology got a new seat, and thanks to a donation from Ignacy Jan Paderewski, the Collegium Paderevianum was built, where the Institutes of Modern Languages are located.
Since the 1960s, the Jagiellonian University has practically no possibility of constructing or expanding a new building. However, the university is growing rapidly despite the lack of funds and space limitations.
In 1993, three medical faculties, namely the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Faculty of Health Care, returned to the university structures. In order to meet the new requirements, the Faculty of Management and Social Communication was established. New fields of study (eg environmental protection, management, marketing, biotechnology, sociology/European study) were introduced, as were new and more effective forms of education and curriculum improvements.
The university can be proud of the highest so-called impact factor, expressed in the number of citations and publications per employee in the most prestigious international scientific journals.
