University history:
The university opened its doors on October 1, 1925 as the Faculty of Commerce (Wyższe Studium Handlowe).
On November 6, 1939, as part of Operation Sonderaktion Krakau, professors of Krakow’s universities were arrested by the Nazis who were either executed or later sent to concentration camps. Among them were four professors from the Academy: Arnold Boland, Zygmunt Sarna, Walenty Wynd and Albin Chapinsky, as well as many other professors who ran some classes at the Academy. Two school buildings were seized and many library books and documents were lost.
The surreptitious study continued throughout the war, until the school was reopened in 1945.
The school was nationalized in 1950 and renamed the Higher School of Economics
In 1974 it was renamed again, becoming the Krakow Academy of Economics (Akademia Ekonomiczna w Krakowie).
In 2007 it received its current name: Cracow University of Economics – (Universytet Ekonomiczny w Krakowie).

Although the name of the university has been changed, the university’s motto and mission were and still are to identify the causes and values of things, to provide a comprehensive education and to combine professional and general knowledge of a methodological and theoretical nature.
