Medical University of Gdańsk – MUG is the largest medical academic institution in northern Poland, and one of the best Polish universities.

University Rankings:

According to the annual Academic University Ranking in Poland published by Perspektywy Edition 2020, it was ranked first as a medical school and sixth as a national university.
According to US News & World Report, it was ranked 290 in clinical medicine for the best international universities in 2020.
According to the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities, it was ranked 301-400 for clinical medicine for the year 2020.

University history:
Akademia Lekarska was founded in Gdask in 1945. Its history is connected with the tradition of the medical practice of surgeons associated with the Surgeons’ Guild, as well as medical and scientific teaching and research, particularly in the Gdańskie Gimnazjum Akademickie (Atheneum Gedanese) founded in 1558.
This institution established the Department of Science and Medicine (Physics and Medicine), which was directed and supervised by eminent scientists. Among the most famous lecturers are: Joachim Oelhavius.
Gimnazjum Academy has represented a high level of achievement and its graduates have been accepted into the third year of medical studies in universities.
After the closure of Gimnazjum Akademickie at the beginning of the 19th century, it was not until the early years of the 20th century that another academic school was established.

The history of pharmaceutical sciences in Gdask dates back to the time of Johannes Platomos, author and founder of the first pharmacy in Gdask in 1527, and Johannes Schmidt, better known as Fabritius, co-author of the oldest Polish pharmacopoeia, published in 1665

Campus :

Historic building of the Debinki Hospital, MUG In 1935, the Gdask Senate initiated the creation of the Medicini Praknicny Academy.
In 1940, after the introduction of pre-clinical courses, the college was renamed Medizinische Akademie in Danzig, offering 5-year full medical studies.
In 1950 the name of the college in Gdask was changed to Akademia Medyczna (Medical University of Gdask).
The university conducted studies in two medical and pharmaceutical specialties, and in 1947 the College of Dentistry was established and the name was later changed to the Sub-Faculty of Dentistry in the College of Medicine
In 1975 the Medical University of Gdask (MUG) opened a branch in Bydgoszcz, which later became independent.
In 1993 the Faculty of Biotechnology Faculties was established as a joint unit of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Gdask
In the year 2005/2006, the medical university started at the College of Health Sciences, and in 2016, work began in the non-surgical medicine center at the university.

University developments:
2007 The modernization of the main teaching hospital, the clinical academic center was launched and the investment is financed from the state budget.
2011 AD The Invasive Medicine Center was built with funding from the state budget, and it is considered the largest healthcare investment in the Pomorsky region. The building consists of several parts comprising 12 surgical suites, the maximum capacity of the center is 311 patients, its roof works as a helipad, and it is connected to the emergency department via two elevators. .
2015 AD The construction of the new non-invasive medical center began, and it consists of 4 connected buildings, it can accommodate 678 beds, excluding the bed space in the day wards and the post-anesthesia unit.
Many new research institutes and clinics have been established, equipment has been upgraded, new facilities have been established, and all buildings including the campus are equipped with computers and a computer network.

Scientific Research :
The university focuses on scientific research and is one of the two medical universities in Poland that can boast the prestigious category of A+ for the Faculty of Pharmacy with the Sub-Faculty of Laboratory Medicine, and A for the other faculties.
In 2012 the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Sub-Faculty of Laboratory Medicine were designated as one of Poland’s six leading national research centers as part of the strategy to expand the country’s competitiveness and innovation.
In 2017, MUG was selected by Elsevier for the Polish Research Leaders Award. in medical sciences.
When the classification system of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education was established, the Medical University of Gdask introduced an internal system of standardized evaluation of certain research units.
Today, three faculties of MUG – Medicine and Pharmacy and the Intercollegiate College of Biotechnology have top positions in the ranking, and the College of Health Sciences, founded in 2006, is preparing for the standard assessment of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and has also submitted an application to be granted the right to award doctoral degrees.
The main sources of funding for research are: legal activity (118 research topics), commissioned projects, development projects, special projects, promoters projects, post-doctoral projects (a total of 109 projects), private research (345 research topics), research support activity (37 projects). ).

Academic tutors conduct scientific research under contracts with external entities, primarily with pharmaceutical companies (19 service and research projects).
University employees implement projects funded by EU framework programs and other community initiatives, as well as structural funds, including the Sectoral Operational Program Increasing competition between institutions.
The high level of research work and the highest qualifications of the university’s academic staff are reflected in the individual differences. The Polish Science Foundation Prize – which is equivalent to the Nobel Prizes – was awarded to professors: Roman Calisan in 2003, Janusz Limon in 2004, and Pyotr Trzonkowski in 2017. In In 2006, the Prime Minister awarded the Scientific Activity Award to Professor Jacek Jassim. The scholarship was awarded to outstanding young scientists in the Research for Scientific Development category.

International cooperation :
The university cooperates with more than 50 universities and scientific centers abroad where students and teachers exchange within the framework of the Lifelong Learning Program.
The university is an active member of many European organizations and institutions.
The university is a founding member of two regional organizations (the Baltic Sea Region University Network, scanBalt)

Clinical message:

The university is the constituent body of four healthcare institutes including two clinical hospitals, the University Medical Center, MUG Hospital, and the Institute of Naval and Tropical Medicine.
Its importance comes from the number of hospitalized patients, which is approximately 60,000, and external visits. that exceeded 250,000, and surgeries of more than 21,000, and laboratory tests.
Its clinical hospitals provide medical treatments not available in northern Poland such as organ transplantation, radiotherapy, oncology, chemotherapy, cardiology, organ surgery, tropical and nuclear medicine and other treatments.

In 2019 the Medical University of Gdask was officially awarded the Ministerial status of a research university and is considered one of the 10 universities in Poland and the only medical university to receive a place in this prestigious group.
The Ministry of Science and Higher Education ranks MUG College of Medicine, College of Pharmacy, and MUG & UG Intercollegiate Colleges of Biotechnology with an A+ grade.
